NATURAL HAZARDS: Mitigating Natural Hazards by Soil Management

Sustainable soil management activities related to erosion protection, preventing landslides and flood risk in FR, IT, SI case study sites lead to mitigate natural hazards in the Alps. A joint case study methodology is developed within case study sites FR, IT and SI.

Based on soil data, soil degradation risks were identified, interpreted, visualised, communicated to stakeholders and used for mitigating natural hazards best practice case studies:

  • CS2_Preventing hydrogeological risk in Aosta Valley Region, Italy

Water erosion

How vulnerable are Alpine soils to water erosion? A study carried out within the SOIL:OurInvisibleAllly project explored this question in  Aosta Valley (IT). Researchers combined soil data with machine learning to map how susceptibility to erosion varies across the region. The findings show why erosion models need to account for the distinctive characteristics of mountain soils.
This research can help guide soil monitoring, conservation and restoration efforts across Alpine landscapes.
