Degradation processes are favoured by a combination of characteristics such as&nbsp;<strong>slow soil formation and development rates<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>harsh climate<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>steep topography<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>complex morphology<\/strong>, limited contents of&nbsp;<strong>organic matter<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>nutrients<\/strong>.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.234), 17px);line-height:1.1\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-headings-color\">In addition, alpine soils can be strongly affected by\u00a0<strong>climate change<\/strong>, and in particular by the changes in the\u00a0<strong>snow\/rainfall patterns<\/strong>, and the increased frequency of\u00a0<strong>extreme events<\/strong>, which may result in severe\u00a0<strong>degradation<\/strong>\u00a0processes (e.g.,\u00a0<strong>soil erosion<\/strong>\u00a0due to extreme rainfall events and\u00a0<strong>snow movements<\/strong>, soil profile\u00a0<strong>truncation<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>nutrient loss<\/strong>).
